27/10/2007 - Chairmans Update on Rock Common Quarry Landfill
You may have heard the deafening silence on Veolia's application for Landfill at Rock Common Quarry. West Sussex County Council will not now hear the application until early 2008, but has had Veolia's agreement, to this delay, at all stages. West Sussex County Council have made the decision to allow Veolia to present additional information to those consultees that have said ‘on the basis of the information within the application, they are unable to make considered representation’. These consultees are then to be asked to, again, make representations on the further information. It is a wise move, as County need definite representations, by all of the bodies that have been consulted, in order to make a reasoned decision on the application. The VERY good news is that the Environment Agency will not retract its policy objection, and it appears that Veolia are not to address that. Open aquifer, potential pollution of the water table, the measures that Veolia are proposing does not sufficiently address this concern.
Reading the objections it appears that further information was requested by Environmental Health at Horsham District Council, and The Ecology Department at West Sussex County Council.
Please do remember the strong objections that were received from the following, and my belief is that none of these has requested further information in order to modify their comments:
The Environment Agency
The South Downs Joint Committee
The National Trust
Natural England
The South Downs Society
CLAG
Horsham District Council
Washington Parish Council
Storrington and Sullington Parish Council
Ashington Parish Council
Wiston Parish Council
Pulborough Parish Council
